RNC makes gay while the sun don’t shine

The one-day delay of the Republican National Convention because of passing Tropical Storm Isaac gave gay delegates and other LGBT leaders the chance to network and increase their visibility around the convention site.

Some are calling the level of LGBT representation at this year’s Republican convention unprecedented. Established partisan groups like Log Cabin Republicans are being joined by non-partisan representatives like the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, who is here to support the GOP candidates they are sponsoring during this election cycle.

Jeff Spitko is the group’s Senior vice president for external affairs.

Spitko: “We are hoping to welcome openly LGBT Republicans that are here enjoying the conference. And making sure they understand who we are as an organization; that the Victory Fund is a non-partisan organization.”

Speaking to OutQ news during a reception called “Out to Win,” co-hosted by Log Cabin Republicans, he listed the gay Republicans being helped by his group this year.

Spitko: “Richard Tisei, who’s running for Congress in Massachusetts. And one of our other big races is Tim Brown. Tim is running for the Ohio state legislature. And when he wins in November, will be the only second openly LGBT member of the Ohio state legislature.”

The country’s first and only gay presidential candidate in either party, Fred Karger, made the rounds, offering hope that the GOP will come around on LGBT rights.

Karger: “I’m here in Tampa because I’m not happy with the way things are going with the platform. And some of the bullying that continues and the gay bashing that goes on within the Republican party. But things are getting way, way better.”

And one way that things literally appear to be getting better is the sheer number of gay representatives and delegates visible here, in a party that has historically shunned them.
