Gay activist and former Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger has launched a global boycott against Amway, claiming the owners of the privately-held direct-selling giant made the biggest family donation to the National Organization for Marriage in that group’s history.
Karger points to tax records recently uncovered that show the Douglas and Maria DeVos Foundation gave $500,000 to the NOM Education Fund back in 2009. Karger says NOM has used the money to fight marriage equality efforts across the country.
KARGER: I think it’s important that we single out these big, big donors who have given hundreds of thousands of dollars, like the De Vos family, to take away rights from people. And we know the National Organization for Marriage has taken his money and used it to destroy people’s lives.
Karger’s group Rights Equal Rights has launched the website BoycottAmway.com
, which features a list of the DeVos family’s many holdings in addition to Amway, including the Orlando Magic basketball team, and a wide variety of real estate, hospitality, car sales and consumer brands. The site also features suggestions for spreading the word–including “asking your Mom to Boycott Amway.”Amway defends the DeVos’s right to do what they want with their personal funds. A company spokeswoman told the news site MLive.com
that the DeVosses believe “one of the highest callings of any individual is to express their own personal beliefs.”
