Freedom to Marry aims campaign at young conservatives

An LGBT advocacy group fighting for marriage equality nationwide is enlisting the help of a key political demographic to help further its cause: young conservatives.

Freedom to Marry launched ‘Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry’ during a Capitol Hill event Tuesday. The initiative seeks to energize conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians under the age of 44.

DEATON: “I think a lot of the positive change that happens in this country starts with young people.”

Tyler Deaton is among the nine gay and straight young conservatives on the campaign’s new leadership committee. The gay 26-year-old helped lobby the New Hampshire legislature to preserve its same-sex marriage law earlier this year. He says campaigning for marriage equality fits perfectly with conservative pro-family ideology.

DEATON: “I think conservatives are at their best when they’re really promoting those values of personal freedom. And so, for me, it’s ‘the less intrusion into your personal life, the better.’”

Deaton says the campaign plans to encourage conservatives to speak out for marriage equality. Participants will stand behind elected officials who back same-sex marriage, and will work toward ending gay marriage bans in several U-S states and the repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

A recent poll found that roughly 46-percent of Republican voters like Deaton who are ages 44 and below support marriage equality.

Deaton says they now plan to host a brunch at the Republican National Convention in Florida next month.
