One of the country’s leading advocates of lifting the military’s ban on openly gay service says the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell might have been a sure thing by now … if other gay rights advocates had taken action sooner, and stronger.
Gay rights supporters held protests around the country on Thursday, demanding passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Dozens gathered in Washington DC at noon for a rally organized by activist group GetEqual. At the same time, GetEqual says around a hundred supporters protested at the San Francisco office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Same-sex spouses of Maryland state employees will now be eligible for the same benefits that opposite-sex spouses get.
An anti-Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell group has started a new website aimed at helping a population it says is vastly under-served … the partners of gays in the military.
