Cyndi Lauper’s LGBT youth housing breaks ground in NYC

A New York housing facility for the homeless has broken ground on a new project – a residence for troubled LGBT young adults, conceived by singer and gay rights activist Cyndi Lauper.

The Bronx facility will be run by “West End Intergenerational Residence” and named the “True Colors Residence” after one of Lauper’s biggest hits. West End says in a statement the facility was the idea of both Lauper and West End’s executive director Collen Jackson. The group says True Colors will be the city’s first permanent housing facility with support services for 18-24 year old lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people with a history of homelessness.

Jackson said “After what seems like an eternity, we have finally broken ground and are one step closer to our goal of turning the concept of the True Colors Residence into reality.” Lauper predicted “the True Colors Residence is going to play a big role in providing these young people with the leg up and encouragement they need.”

West End says the project will include 30 studio apartments, indoor and outdoor community spaces, a computer room and a resource library. Bronx Borough President Scott Stringer said in a statement that “Finding safe, affordable housing is step one for New Yorkers working to build a better life for themselves, and the groundbreaking for True Colors will create a refuge for some of our city’s most at risk young people.” West End told OutQ News it’s aiming to have the facility complete by Spring of next year.

  1. Hi, My name is Derrick Lee and I was hoping o be eligible for affordable housing. I recently got my CASAC-T to persue a career in the counseling field. I am a 38 year old homosexual male in recovery from illicit drugs. I have maintained sobriety for the last (2) years after 15 years of homelessness, incarcerations and active addiction. I have since worked diligently to be a productive member of society via higher education, 12 step meetings, and most importantly, being self sufficient. Now I reside with a friend until I am able to save up enough money to get my first very own place and I am hoping that you can assist me with housing. Even if I am not able to be helped by you, I am grateful that you are helping much younger gay people to not have to travel the road I did to survive. Thank you so much Ms. Lauper for reaching out to the LGBT community. Appreciate your taking time to read this email and I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. I can be contacted at crystian34@yahoo.com or my cell number which is (646) 642-6150!!!
