NJ Governor Picks Gay Rights Champion as Running Mate
Gay rights supporters in New Jersey are ecstatic with Governor Jon Corzine’s choice for running mate, State Senator Loretta Weinberg. Weinberg is a 74 year-old straight grandmother – and according to Steven Goldstein from gay rights group Garden State Equality – one of the greatest gay right advocates the state has ever seen.
Goldstein: “Loretta is the author of every single LGBT Civil Rights law enacted in New Jersey in the past generation. Every one.”
Governor Corzine is trailing Republican challenger Chris Christie in this year’s governor’s race – in some polls, by as many as double-digits. Goldstein says the choice of Weinberg to run as his Lieutenant Governor will work to fire up the state’s many progressives.
Goldstein: “You name the progressive issue, Loretta has been the champion. Loretta Weinberg will certainly help close the gap a great deal.”
Goldstein and political insiders agree that Corzine would likely have gone for a less progressive running made, if not for a high-profile corruption scandal that took down many key Democratic figures around the state last week.
